Today is the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. The Scriptural texts bring before us the power of God’s Word and the effect that it brings to the community of believers. In both the Old Testament lection and the Gospel we see how the liturgical proclamation of God’s word commands attentive listening by the assembly as a sign of respect and in anticipation of hearing God’s voice. We sing in today’s Responsorial Psalm, “Your words, Lord, are spirit and life,” and indeed they are!

As we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day we mark the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The second lection for today is taken from the First Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians which has become a most popular scriptural option for the celebration of the sacrament of marriage. The Apostle reminds us of the power of love and of the things which characterize it. He speaks of the “theological virtues” and writes, “So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Yes, love is that wonderful virtue which accompanied all the works of our Lord, including His sacrificial death for us on the cross. It is love which should give strength and inspiration to our words and deeds. The Lord Jesus commanded His disciples to become agents of love by being merciful and compassionate to all.

Congratulations to the winners of the “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster contest for ages 5-14 sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Lake Council #3359.
We assemble on the Lord’s Day to celebrate the Holy Eucharist which recalls the Paschal Mystery of the Lord’s suffering, death and resurrection. For it was on this day, the first day of the week, that the Lord Jesus rose from the dead vanquishing the forces of darkness and bringing salvation to those who hope in Him. In the Responsorial Psalm for the liturgy we sing,” Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations.”
If you have not yet responded to the 2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal, there is still time to do so as the 2015 Appeal funds are used to support ministries and programs through the end of the diocesan fiscal year on June 30, 2016.
On Friday, January 22 we mark the 43rd anniversary of the decisions by the Supreme Court on Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton that legalized abortion by a 7-2 majority throughout the United States. Since that time the Knights of Columbus have been actively supporting the Pro-Life Movement and have fought to have the court reverse its rulings.
Christians in the Middle East face persecutions simply for their belief in the One who taught us to love one another. Despite the genocidal persecution against them, they continue to be an inspiration as they remain true to their faith and bear witness to the love of God and neighbor.
Please join us on January 19th, at 6:30 PM in Suchon Hall for our next Dogmatic Dinner. We will discuss: If I were a Saint, what would my New Year’s Resolution be?
My sincere thanks to all those who helped make our Christmas liturgies uplifting and beautiful: the choir, lectors, extra ordinary ministers of Holy Communion, ushers, and altar servers.
As we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day we commemorate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus in the Jordan. As I wrote in my article last Sunday, today’s commemoration is one of the mysteries we celebrate in the feast of the Epiphany. The Gospels tell us that the Lord Jesus left His home in Nazareth and traveled to the Jordan River where He encountered His cousin and precursor John the Baptist.
